Learning to Play Five Card Stud

Five card Stud is an earlier poker game that has fallen out of favor with the majority of those playing these days (both at casinos and in online poker rooms), Seven card Stud has taken its place in acceptance with a significant quantity of those playing poker.

Five playing card Stud has been a fairly easy poker game, some feeling it is too easy to keep participants interested for extended periods.  With but a single hidden card there has been little suspense in determining what other players have, bluffing can only go so far, with good hands being easily observed by other players for an easy fold.

That said, it does have its appeal, and there are still a few sites where Five card Stud is played.

Here is how you play the poker game Five card Stud:

• Prior to the poker game being dealt every one of the players have to ante up (the table restrictions will set the ante size).
• The dealer gives every person two cards, one face down (the ‘hole’ card) and one card face up.
• A round of betting takes place, with the participant showing the highest valued playing card going first.
• All competitors are given one more card, face up.
• Additional betting takes place.
• All competitors are dealt another card, face up.
• A further round of betting follows, in this round of betting the smallest wager is doubled.
• The closing card is dealt to all players (face up).
• The final wagers are placed.

After the last wagering round all remaining competitors display their final hand, with the most recent person to raise displaying their hands first.  The best poker hand wins the game and takes the pot.

Betting Note: Five Card Stud is different from Texas Hold’em and Omaha Poker as the player having the best value face up hand bets first for that round.  The wagering then continues in a clockwise direction around the table, however the first bettor for every round can vary since the best cards showing moves around the table.
